Where other tools fit better

Shut Up: If you don’t want to see comments at all, friendly or not, Shut Up is simpler. It hides comment sections on a very large number of websites, not just six platforms, and you switch them back on per site. Comment Shield filters instead and leaves the rest visible.

Unhook: If your main problem on YouTube is distraction, meaning recommendations, Shorts and autoplay, Unhook is the proven choice with more than a million users on Chrome. It also runs in Firefox for Android, while Comment Shield is desktop only. Unhook can only hide comments entirely, though, not just the hurtful ones.

BlockTube: If you want specific channels, videos or people gone on YouTube, BlockTube does more: besides comments it blocks videos and whole channels, optionally with regular expressions. In return, you create every rule yourself.

The platforms’ own filters: Instagram (“Hidden Words”) and YouTube Studio mainly filter comments under your own posts, and they also work in the mobile apps. If you post yourself, turn them on as well. Under other people’s posts they help very little, and that is where Comment Shield comes in.

Good to know: Tune no longer exists

The best-known tool of this kind, Tune by Jigsaw (a Google subsidiary), has been discontinued. Jigsaw is shutting down the underlying Perspective API on December 31, 2026. Comment Shield detects insults locally in your browser and doesn’t depend on a service like that.

What Comment Shield can’t do

Comment Shield usually misses sarcasm and irony without clear trigger words, because it works with word lists and patterns rather than real language understanding. It doesn’t run on phones, and LinkedIn and Twitch chat aren’t supported yet.

In short

No comments at all, of any kind: Shut Up or Unhook. Specific channels and people on YouTube: BlockTube. Keep reading comments, but without the insults: Comment Shield.
